The best time of year to replace a roof in Calgary

Roofing · March 11, 2026 · 4 min read

Why late spring and early fall win, what winter roofing really involves, and how scheduling early saves money after a hail season.

Shingles need warmth to seal. That single fact drives roofing season in Calgary more than anything else.

Late spring through early fall is ideal: temperatures above roughly 5°C let the adhesive strips bond within days, and crews get full working days without wind delays.

Mid-summer is busiest, especially after a hail event, when every roofer in the city is booked out weeks. If your roof is merely aging rather than leaking, booking in May or September usually gets you a better date and a calmer crew.

Winter replacement is possible and sometimes necessary after storm damage. Shingles are hand-sealed and the roof seals fully the following spring. It's not ideal, but it beats leaving a leaking roof open through February.

Repairs and emergency tarping happen year round. If you see a stain on a ceiling, don't wait for a season, a small flashing fix now is far cheaper than replacing insulation and drywall later.
